Prepare for the world of work

Mentor of the Year Award piloted in London

Thursday 31 July

A new Mentor of the Year award, to be piloted in London and the South East this year, was announced at a networking event for mentors and students hosted by international law firm Freshfields on 3 July.

The award will recognise the commitment of volunteers who give their time and skills to help Career Academy students prepare for the world of work. Students will nominate their mentor based on an outstanding commitment to the mentoring experience and the winner will be announced at next year’s graduation ceremony. Details will be sent to participating Career Academy centres in the autumn.

The event held this month follows a successful “meet and greet” held at the Photographers’ Gallery in January this year, and together with the launch of the new award, forms part of Career Academies UK’s development of volunteer engagement and communication.

For some students this was their first experience of networking and all attendees were encouraged to mingle and share their experiences with fellow students and mentors. From developing their handshake to asking for someone else's contact details, student were taken out of their comfort zone and given the chance to really improve their communication skills and confidence.
